Lieber Fred,

 Die Londoner bürgerlich-liberale Wochenschrift „Public Opinion“ druckte am 19. August 1871 einen großen Teil des gegen die Internationale gerichteten Artikels aus der „National-Zeitung“ vom 30. Juli 1871 ab (A German View of the Internationale. In: Public Opinion. London. Vol. 20. Nr. 517, 19. August 1871. S. 229; Die Internationale. In: National-Zeitung. (Morgen-Ausgabe.) Berlin. Nr. 351, 30. Juli 1871. S.1). Marx verfasste daraufhin eine Erwiderung (Karl Marx: To the Editor of the “Public Opinion”) und übersandte diese an Engels (s. u.).
Schließen Sei so gut, das auf andrer Seite Stehende an die „Public Opinion“, 4, Southampton Street, Strand, zu schreiben mit meiner Unterschrift. Meine Handschrift könnte den Kerls Vorwand zu misprints geben. Was nach deutscher Seite zu thun ist, bei meiner Rückkehr.

Ich habe heute den ersten schönen Tag hier. Gestern u. vorgestern Regen. Leider habe ich meine Lebermedizin nicht mitgenommen, aber die Luft thut mir ausserordentlich wohl. Wenn es möglich (u. die Kinder nicht vorher ankommen, würde ich gern bis Donnerstag hier bleiben, aber no cash in hand, u. ich sehe aus  Engels an Marx, 18.8.1871.
Schließen Deinem Brief, daß Du auch blank bist.

Was den Netschajeff betrifft, der nach seiner Art die falschen Gerüchte über sich selbst höchsteigenhändig in die Welt setzt, so muß, nach meiner Rückkehr, von Seiten des General Council öffentlich gegen ihn procedirt werden.

I not only request you to insert the enclosed reply in your next number, but I demand an ample and complete apology in the same place of your paper where you have insterted the libel.

I should regret beeing forced to take legal proceedings against your paper.

2) To the Editor of the „Public Opinion“

Sir,

In your publication of  Korrektur von Engels.
Schließen August 19 today you translate from the Berlin „Nationalzeitung“, a notorious organ of Bismarck's, a most atrocious libel against the „International Workingmen's Association“ in which the following passage occures:

„Capital“, says Karl Marx, „trades in the strenght and life of the workmen workman “, but his new Messiah himself is not a step farther advanta[ged] advanced : he takes from the mechanic mechanic the money paid him by the capitalist for his labour,| and generously gives him in exchange a bill on the a State that may possibly exist a thousand years hence. What edifying stories are told about the vile corruption of socialist agigators, what a shameful abuse they make make of the money confided to them, and what mutual accusations they throw in each other's faces, are things we have abundantly learned by the congresses and from the organs of the party. There is here a monstrous volcano of filth, from whose xx(?) eruptions nothing better could issue than a Parisian Commune“.

In reply to the venal writers of the „Nationalzeitung“, I consider it quite sufficient to declare that I never xxxxxxxx(?) asked or received one single farthing from the working class of this or any other country.

Save the General Secretary who receives a weekly salary of 10 sh., all the members members of the „General Council“ „General Council of the Interational“ do their work gratuitously. The financial account of the General Council, annually laid before the General Congress of the  Korrektur von Engels.
Schließen „ International Association “, have always been sanctioned unanimously without prov provoking any discussion whatever.
