When I read your last paragraph last night I thought you had a superfluous word—the word “Already”—and now that the proof has arrived I see that the printer notices it—Your meaning to Englishmen would | be understood better without than with the additional word

Did you see the  Notes from Versailles. <From our special correspondent>. In: The Daily News. Nr. 7850, 27. Juni 1871. S. 5, Sp. 5: „ ... At the very beginning of the civil war, it was stated that General the Marquis de Gallifet, when quartered somewhere near St. Germain, to three Federal prisoners—a lieutenant, a sergeant, and a corporal. They were not captured in a fight, but having strayed too far from an outpost, were surprised. The Versailles papers reported that General Gallifet, without any court-martial, shot these tree men of his own mere motion, and they published the text of his proclamation, glorifying himself for the example he had made. The Versailles papers, on and all, said Amen! This story has never been questioned. ...“. – Siehe z.
