I suppose you were surprised and disappointed at my absence on Tuesday evening. It was, however, really unavoidable on my part. Business of great importance, partly private and partly international, detained me. I will however explain when I see you.

We rode by train to Farrington St. on Sunday night but had to walk it home from that.

| Could you send me by bookpost a few more copies of the Address on Washburne. Have you seen the Pall Mall Gazette of yesterday evening? It is not unlikely that I will call upon you before Tuesday as I want about half an hour's earnest conversation with you. Please convey my kind respects to Dr & Madame Marx. My wife joins me in best wishes to you and Madame Engels—
