My dear Engels,

It is the height of impudence for the Manchester Guardian to ask a German patriot to do anything for it.

You, however, are a philosopher. We shall be grateful to anybody who can give us a good letter of introduction to Carlsruhe for a gentleman who is going out (if he can) to General Werder’s headquarters, | to see what he can of the war, and to correspond for us when he sees occasion. He is Capt Whitting of the 9th. Reg? Have you any connection that will enable you to help us? Mr. Taylor suggests that you may not object to do it, in a letter I have just received from him.
