| Dear Williams!
I am where I was, and escaped with a whole skin so far.
You recollect the “Paper-project”. Well, through a series of operations and lucky chances that I cannot detail now, I have got into possession of a Paper, until now belonging to our liberal enemies—the “Mitteldeutsche Volkszeitung”. I send you the numbers that have appeared since I have it, and beg you, to get us some subscribers, and a good article now and then. Of course, the political part must be quite “neutral” now, the smallest show of opposition would cause our suppression; but as to the social questions we have full elbowroom, and on the importance of our having an organ quite at our disposal as soon as the „foreigners” are gone, I need not dwell here. For the moment I cannot pay anything yet, but I have the best prospects, and if Eccarius would send me a correspondence now and then, I am sure it would not be to his disadvantage.
| In a day or two the (old) Manifest of the Intern. will be printed, perhaps with the omission of one sentence about Prussia and Poland, that might become dangerous.
How about the “work”?
Write soon, and carefully.
We are all well, and send you our love.
Your J. MillerCould you give me the address of a friend in Paris?
Please, send me the “Commonwealth” regularly, or in case it should have gone down, Reynolds' Newspaper, so that I can bring something about the working class-movement. But don't forget it!
Remember us to Mrs. Williams , and the three Misses W. and Helen not to be forgotten.
Zeugenbeschreibung und Überlieferung
Zeugenbeschreibung
Die Beilage („I send you the numbers“) ist nicht überliefert.
August 1866 an Engels geschickt hatte (siehe Marx an Engels, 13.8.1866: „Einliegend ...“). Datierung in der Erstveröffentlichung: 10. August 1866 mit Verweis auf den o. g. Vermerk. August 1866 („You recollect ...“).
