I have received your letter & Vermutlich übersandte Marx Beesly den „Courrier
français“ vom 23. Juli 1867 mit dem Artikel
von A[uguste] Vermorel: Il n’y a pas de sentiment
plus haïssable en politique que l’hypocrisie
doctrinaire … In: Courrier français. Paris.
Nr. 36, 23. Juli 1867. S. 1, Sp. 4. Vermorel
unterstützte die am 4. Juli 1867 von Beesly in
London gehaltene Rede zu den sogenannten Sheffield
Outrages, Gewalttätigkeiten von Gewerkschaftern
gegen Unternehmer und Arbeiter 1866/67. Beesly
verurteilte die Gewalttätigkeiten, verteidigte
aber zugleich die Forderungen der Gewerkschaften
nach Rechtssicherheit und gesetzlicher

Français for which I am much obliged to you as also for your
kind expressions of sympathy & approval. I have had a
great deal
| to bear both in public & in private but
I have the satisfaction of not having retracted anything
& I believe I shall have the further satisfaction of
seeing those who
| have tried to visit me with penalties
foiled. The Council of the College decided yesterday to do
nothing & I think other attempts will fail in the same
way. But it has been a near
| thing & after all the
combat is only adjourned. In some shape it must sooner or
later be renewed for when duty calls I hope I shall never be
silent.
If there should be any other notices in
the Courrier
Français & you can spare the paper would.

kindly cut them out & send them to me? I should esteem
it a great favour. I am going out of town immediately but
they will be forwarded to me.

Der Brief besteht aus einem Bogen festem, weißem Papier im Format 226 × 180 mm. Prägung: „University Hall, Gordon Square, W.C.“ Alle vier Seiten hat Beesly vollständig beschrieben. Schreibmaterial: schwarze Tinte.
Archivsignatur des Moskauer Marx-Engels-Instituts (IMĖ): „Rj 1404a–d“.
Von unbekannter Hand: auf der ersten Seite oben rechts mit Bleistift der Vermerk: „1867“.
