I am obliged to you for your promptitude in calling my attention to the paragraph in the Daily Telegraph

The following answer I sent off, in time for to-morrows’ (Friday) paper,

To the Editor of the Daily Telegraph

Sir—In a paragraph in yesterday’s Telegraph you state that Mr Robert Reid who is now delivering lectures on the Commune of Paris is unknown to you.

The public will observe that you do not deny my conection with the Daily Telegraph as you simply state that I am unknown to you, viz. to the writer of the paragraph,

I beg to say in answer to that statement that I was engaged by Leut. Colonel Montagu Hicks your Agent in Paris, and that I have, a document in his own hand writing to prove this statement.

The most important reports of Paris news by Telegram, published in your paper during my engagement, were from my pen,

I depend on the immediate publication of this letter,

The Telegraph statement such as it stands is a libel on my character, and an attempt to destroy my position as a lecturer. If they don’t immediately publish my letter, I think an action could be brought against them in the County Court,
