I called this evening on you but could not make anyone hear at your house, so not to lose my journey I sit down to write you this line, intending to drop it in your letter box.

I wanted to speak to you about my private affairs. I am very much disgusted at my treatment on the Evening Standard (over a question of promotion) & have determined to leave it as soon as possible. (This is of course strictly entre nous). I shall either go abroad or take a situation on a London evening paper. The Daily Telegraph people would be glad to have me back but I cannot stand the night work. Now the only evening paper likely to suit me is the Pall Mall, and my object in calling on you was to ascertain who is the best person on that paper to address in reference to an engagement. I thought from your past connection with the paper that you would be likely to know.

That was what I wanted to see you about, as well as to have a general chat.
