Soweit aus der Fotokopie zu ersehen ist, besteht der Brief aus einem Bogen weißem Papier. Auf der ersten Seite befindet sich das vorausgehende Schreiben von M. D. Conway an Marx vom 24. August 1871. Die vierte Seite hat Marx etwa zur Hälfte beschrieben. Die übrigen zwei Seiten sind vermutlich leer. Schreibmaterial: schwarze Tinte.

Von unbekannter Hand: Nummerierung des Briefes oben links auf der vierten Seite mit Bleistift: „71.“

Es handelt sich um den Entwurf eines Briefes mit zahlreichen Korrekturen. Die Varianten sind hier vereinfacht wiedergegeben (zum Handschriftenbild siehe das Digitalisat).

On my return from Brighton I reawakend found your note d.d. Aug. 24M. D. Conway an Marx, 24.8.1871.. The next meeting of the General Council takes place to-dayMeeting of the General Council August 29, 1871. (MEGA I/22. S. 598/599)., but according to by xxx consequent upon a resolution taken passed last on Tuesday, temporarily no stranger nobody will be admitted except the members of the Council there will during the present confusion continuence of the courts martial in France no visitors be any longer admitted admissible . This general strict measure had been become necessary rendered necessary by the abuse of the semi-publicity intrusion of French police agents.

I have the honor to inclose a subscription list for the French refugees. Their number, (they are now about 80–90) increasing daily (there are now about 80 of number) while our funds are almost quite exhausted. Their condition is truly deplorable. The best thing would be, if possible, to form a separate committee for employment charged to find employment for the refugees. There are amongst them many those men who most of them beeing whose great majority consists of skilled workmen and artists. Perhaps
