                    engaged in that <add place="superlinear">patriotic</add> business. The whole
                    family was delighted to hear <ref xml:id="d615d0eb-362b-4555-95d0-eb362bd55593" corresp="#d82185e4-8ec2-413c-a185-e48ec2613c98" type="editorialNote">that our dear Laura has
                            passed victoriously through the critical juncture</ref><note xml:id="d82185e4-8ec2-413c-a185-e48ec2613c98" corresp="#d615d0eb-362b-4555-95d0-eb362bd55593" type="editorial">Geburt von <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M9383339">Marc-Laurent
                                Lafargue</persName>, der am 31. Januar 1871 geboren wurde (siehe

                <p rend="MBTextOhneEinzug" style="text-align: justify; ">Embrace little <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0004125">Schnappy</persName> on my part and tell him that Old Nick
                    feels highly elated at the two photogramms of his successor. In the “serious”
                    copy the stern qualities of the little man protrude, while in his attitude as
                    franc-fileur there is a charming expression of humor and
                    espièglerie.</p>
                <p rend="MBTextMitEinzug" style="text-align: justify; ">You know my low opinion of
                    middleclass heroes. Still, <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0006645 http://d-nb.info/gnd/118904388">Jules Favre</persName> et Co
                    have contrived to surpass my worst anticipations. When <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0009967 http://d-nb.info/gnd/117636460">Trochu</persName> had carried out his mysterious “plan”, that is to say,
                    when <ref xml:id="c13fba9d-0013-4b11-bfba-9d0013db11d2" corresp="#cb46af12-2075-407b-86af-122075707be9" type="editorialNote">that
                            “sabre
                            orthodoxe”, that “crétin
                            militäire”</ref><note xml:id="cb46af12-2075-407b-86af-122075707be9" corresp="#c13fba9d-0013-4b11-bfba-9d0013db11d2" type="editorial">Siehe <ref target="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M7914526">Marx
                                an L. Kugelmann, 4.2.1871</ref>.</note> had
                    pushed the <hi rendition="#u">passive</hi> resistance of Paris to that point
                    where there remained only the alternative of starvation or capitulation—Jules
                    Favre and Co. might have followed the precedent of <ref xml:id="d073a6e9-d290-4832-b3a6-e9d2909832c8" corresp="#d20abc84-1cb5-4028-8abc-841cb52028a4" type="editorialNote">the
                            Governor of Toul</ref><note xml:id="d20abc84-1cb5-4028-8abc-841cb52028a4" corresp="#d073a6e9-d290-4832-b3a6-e9d2909832c8" type="editorial"><persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M5054051 http://viaf.org/viaf/316036164">Auguste Eugène Huck</persName>.</note>. When
                    his power of resistance had altogether broken down, he did not <hi rendition="#u">capitulate</hi>. He simply informed the Prussians of the real
                    state of things, declared that he could not any longer go on with the defence,
                    being deprived of provisions, and that they might now do as they liked. He made
                    them no consession at all. He simply recogni<unclear reason="illegible" cert="high">s</unclear>ed <hi rendition="#u">a fait <pb/> ac<add place="intralinear">c</add>ompli</hi>. Favre et Co., on the contrary,
                    not only sign a formal capitulation. They have impudence to act on behalf <hi rendition="#u">of all France,</hi> although <subst>
                        <del rendition="#s">xx</del>
                        <add place="superlinear">in</add>
                    </subst> complete ignorance of the state of affairs <hi rendition="#u">en-dehors
                        de Paris</hi>, in regard to which they were strictly confined to the
                    dishinterested information
                        <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0005607 http://d-nb.info/gnd/11851136X">Bismarck</persName> condescended to vouchsave them.
                    Moreover, having capitulated, having become Messieurs les prisonniers du
                        <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0010286 http://d-nb.info/gnd/118632884">roi de Prusse</persName>, they go further and
                    declare that the Bordelais delegation has lost its power and must only act in
                    union with “Messieurs les prisonniers du roi de Prusse”. Why, even <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0008553 http://d-nb.info/gnd/118586416">Louis Bonaparte</persName>, after his capitulation and
                    surrender at Sedan, declared to Bismarck he could enter into no <hi rendition="#u">negociations</hi> with him, because he had ceased to be a
                    free agent, and because, by the very fact of his being a <hi rendition="#u">Prussian prisoner</hi>, he had ceased to hold any authority over France! </p>
                <p rend="MBTextMitEinzug" style="text-align: justify; ">Thus even L. Bonaparte was
                    less shameless than Favre et Co! The only condition which Favre could have
                    accepted <hi rendition="#u">conditionally,</hi> that is to say under the reserve
                    of his act being assented to by the Bordelais delegation, was the <hi rendition="#u">armistice</hi>. Yet to settle the <hi rendition="#u">terms of
                        that armistice</hi> he must have left to the men who were not prisoners of
                        <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0010286 http://d-nb.info/gnd/118632884">le roi de Prusse</persName>. They would certainly
                    not <add place="superlinear">have</add> allowed the Prussians to exclude from
                    that armistice the <hi rendition="#u">Eastern theatre of war</hi>, and would not
                    have allowed the Prussians to improve, on the plea of the armistice, the whole
                    outlines of their military occupation, rounding it off in the way most
                    profitable to themselves.</p>
                <p rend="MBTextMitEinzug" style="text-align: justify; "><pb/> Embolded by the
                    dastardly
                    servilism of the Paris delegation who presume to participate in the government
                    of France, after having become Messieurs les capitulards et les prisonniers du
                        <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0010286 http://d-nb.info/gnd/118632884">roi de Prusse</persName>, <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0005607 http://d-nb.info/gnd/11851136X">Bismarck</persName> considers himself and acts <add place="superlinear">already</add> as the <hi rendition="#u">de facto</hi>
                    <del rendition="#s">g<unclear reason="illegible" cert="high">xxxxxx</unclear></del> supreme authority in France. He <hi rendition="#u">protests</hi> against <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0002176 http://d-nb.info/gnd/118716263">Gambetta</persName>’s decree
                    relating to the general elections as interfering with their “liberty”. He
                    dictates the terms on which the general assembly ought to be chosen. Why!
                        <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0002176 http://d-nb.info/gnd/118716263">Gambetta</persName> might reply by <hi rendition="#u">protesting</hi> against the conditions under which at this
                    very moment the <hi rendition="#u">general elections for the Reichstag</hi> are
                    carried on <hi rendition="#u">in Germany</hi>. He might insist that to render
                    these elections <hi rendition="#u">free</hi>. Bismarck ought above all things to
                    abolish or at least to suspend <hi rendition="#u">the state of siege</hi>
                    maintained through great part of Prussia. To give you one instance of the <hi rendition="#u">liberty</hi> of election in Germany. At <hi rendition="#u">Frankfurt</hi> (on the <subst>
                        <del rendition="#s">Maine</del>
                        <add place="across">Mein</add>
                    </subst> ) <ref xml:id="d15cac90-43fd-4b76-9cac-9043fd2b76c4" corresp="#fd3bb8f0-5e01-4e99-bbb8-f05e01de992a" type="editorialNote">a workman’s candidate</ref><note xml:id="fd3bb8f0-5e01-4e99-bbb8-f05e01de992a" corresp="#d15cac90-43fd-4b76-9cac-9043fd2b76c4" type="editorial"><persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0004729">Joseph
                                Schneider</persName>.</note> (not residing in <ref xml:id="f87d76a4-e5a2-4957-bd76-a4e5a29957a7" corresp="#ad1b5b56-265a-40ab-9b5b-56265a80ab67" type="editorialNote">Frankfort</ref><note xml:id="ad1b5b56-265a-40ab-9b5b-56265a80ab67" corresp="#f87d76a4-e5a2-4957-bd76-a4e5a29957a7" type="editorial">Wie bei der

                    campaign in that town. What do the Prussian authorities resort to? To the
                    expulsion of that candidate from Frankfort by the police force!</p>
                <p rend="MBTextMitEinzug" style="text-align: justify; ">I hope that the Prussians
                    will insist on their modest demand of 400 millions of £. sterl. war contribution
                    by France! This <subst>
                        <del rendition="#s">will</del>
                        <add place="intralinear">may</add>
                    </subst>
                    rouse
                    even the French middleclass <subst>
                        <del rendition="#s">wh<unclear reason="illegible" cert="low">o
                                will</unclear></del>
                        <add place="superlinear">whose</add>
                    </subst> manœuvres<del rendition="#s">,</del> together with the intrigues of
                    the <add place="superlinear">local</add> administration (which <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0002176 http://d-nb.info/gnd/118716263">Gambetta</persName> has allowed to a great part to rest in
                    the hands of Bonapartists, Orleanists etc) are the true <del rendition="#s"><unclear reason="illegible" cert="high">xxx</unclear></del> key to the
                        <add place="superlinear">till now</add>
                    reverses
                    of the <del rendition="#s">present</del> war. Even the middleclass may at last
                    become aware that they will lose more by giving in than by fighting!</p>
                <p rend="MBTextMitEinzug" style="text-align: justify; "><pb/> At the same time, if
                    France holds still out for same time, the Foreign relations will become much
                    more favourable to her cause. </p>
                <p rend="MBTextMitEinzug" style="text-align: justify; ">In England the <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0006962 http://d-nb.info/gnd/118695207">Gladstone</persName> ministry is seriously endangered. It may
                        <del rendition="#s">have</del> soon be kicked out. The public opinion here
                    is now again <hi rendition="#u">warlike</hi> to the highest degree. This change
                    has been worked by Prussia’s demands, mainly by her asking <hi rendition="#u"><unclear reason="illegible" cert="high">Pondichery</unclear></hi>
                    and the 20
                    firstrate
                    French men-of-war. <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0011324 1014122">John Bull</persName> sees in this a
                    menace against England and a Russian intrigue (and these demands have indeed
                    been
                    suggested
                    to Prussia by the St. Petersburgh cabinet).</p>
                <p rend="MBTextMitEinzug" style="text-align: justify; ">In Russia itself a great
                    change seems imminent. Since the assumption of the Imperial title by the
                        <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0010286 http://d-nb.info/gnd/118632884">king of Prussia</persName>, the anti-German party,
                    the so-called Muscovite party, led by the <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0005230 http://d-nb.info/gnd/118647997">prince
                        successor</persName>, has again got the upperhand. It is very probable that
                    the <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0005229 http://d-nb.info/gnd/118501860">present emperor</persName> will either have to
                    accept its dictates and a consequent change of his foreign policy, or that he
                    will share the fate of his predeccessors and by some means or other released of
                    his “mortal body”. If such a convulsion in Russia takes place, Prussia, whose
                    frontiers on the Russian and Austrian  <del rendition="#s"><unclear reason="illegible" cert="high">be</unclear></del> sides, are quite
                    denuded of troops, guite exposed and defenceless, will prove unable to keep up
                    her present forces in France. She will at once lower her tone and become quite
                    traitable.</p>
                <p rend="MBTextMitEinzug" style="text-align: justify; ">Hence, if France holds out,
                    if she improves the armistice to repair her forces, if she understands at last
                    that inorder to carry on a revolutionary war, revolutionary measures and
                    revolutionary energy are wanted, she may still be saved. </p>
                <p rend="MBTextMitEinzug" style="text-align: justify; "><pb/>
                    <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0005607 http://d-nb.info/gnd/11851136X">Bismarck</persName> knows perfectly that he is in a
                    fix. He hopes to get out of it by “bullying”. He confides in the cooperation of
                    all reactionary elements of France.</p>
