                    committee of <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0004439 http://d-nb.info/gnd/119221233">
                  <hi rendition="#u">Robin</hi>
               </persName>
               <hi rendition="#u">, <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0005398 http://d-nb.info/gnd/118506102">Bakunine</persName>’s</hi>
               <hi rendition="#u" xml:space="preserve"> agent</hi>
                    who, at Geneva, did all in his power to <hi rendition="#u">discredit the General
                        Council</hi> (he attacked it publicly in the <hi rendition="#u">
                  <bibl type="periodika" corresp="">Égalité</bibl>
               </hi>) and to prepare
                    la dictature de Bakounine sur <orgName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0004811 https://d-nb.info/gnd/503624-0">l’Association
                        Internationale</orgName>. He has been expressly sent to Paris there to act
                    in the same sense. Hence this fellow must be closely watched without becoming
                    aware of having a surveillant at his side.</p>
            <p sameAs="MBTextmitEinzug">In order to <add place="superlinear">vous</add> mettre
                    au courant I must give you a succinct review of <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0005398 http://d-nb.info/gnd/118506102">Bakunine</persName>’s intrigue.</p>
            <p sameAs="MBTextmitEinzug">
               <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0005398 http://d-nb.info/gnd/118506102">Bakunine</persName> does not
                    belong to the <hi rendition="#u">
                  <orgName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0004811 https://d-nb.info/gnd/503624-0">International</orgName>
               </hi> but for about 1½ years. C’est un nouveau venu.

                    International middleclass Association founded in opposition to the Proletarian
                    International) he played one of the
                    mountebank
                    parts he delights in. He proposed a series of propositions, stupid in
                    themselves, but affecting an air of swaggering radicalism <del rendition="#s">
                  <unclear reason="illegible" cert="low">send</unclear>
               </del> calculated
                    to frighten les crétins bourgeois. In that way, being outvoted by the majority,
                    he made his noising exit from the Ligue and had this great event triumphantly
                    announced in the European press. He understands la réclame almost as well as
                        <ref xml:id="eb6c321d-520d-4d9c-ac32-1d520d1d9c8a" corresp="#b5fbdb6e-8792-4f93-bbdb-6e8792ff93a5" type="editorialNote">

            <p sameAs="MBTextmitEinzug">Then he entered our <orgName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0004811 https://d-nb.info/gnd/503624-0">Association</orgName>—its Geneva branche Romande. His first step was a
                    conspiracy. He founded <orgName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0002566">“<hi rendition="#u">l’Alliance de
                            la Démocratie Socialiste</hi>”</orgName>. The Programme of that society
                    was nothing else but the series of resolutions proposed by <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0005398 http://d-nb.info/gnd/118506102">Bakunine</persName> on the
                    Lausanne
                        <orgName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0004256 https://d-nb.info/gnd/5186746-1">Peace
                        League</orgName>
               
                    Congress. The organisation was that of a sect with its head
                    centre at Geneva, constituting itself <pb/> as an <hi rendition="#u">International</hi> Association which was to have General Congresses of its
                    own, which was to form an independent international body, and, <hi rendition="#u">at the same time</hi>, to be an integral member of our <hi rendition="#u">Internationale</hi>. In one word, our Association was by this
                    interloping secret society by and by to be converted into an instrument du Russe
                    Bakounine. The pretext was, that this new society was founded for the special
                    purpose “à faire la propagande théorique”. Very funny indeed, considering that
                    Bakunine and his acolytes know nothing of theory. But Bakunine’s programme was
                        “<hi rendition="#u">the</hi> theory”. It consisted, in <subst>
                  <del rendition="#ow">point</del>
                  <add place="across">fact</add>
               </subst> , of 3 points.</p>

                  <p> 1) That the <del rendition="#s">
                        <unclear reason="illegible" cert="high">xxx</unclear>
                     </del> first requirement of the social Revolution
                                was—<hi rendition="#u">the abolition of inheritance</hi>,
                                vie<ex>i</ex>llerie <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0009313 http://d-nb.info/gnd/118604937">St. Simon</persName>iste, dont le charlatan et <hi rendition="#u">l’ignoramus</hi>
                     <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0005398 http://d-nb.info/gnd/118506102">Bakunine</persName> se faisait l’éditeur
                            responsable. It is evident: <subst>
                        <del rendition="#s">
                           <unclear reason="illegible" cert="low">As</unclear>
                        </del>
                        <add place="across">If</add>
                     </subst> you <subst>
                        <del rendition="#ow">have</del>
                        <add place="across">had</add>
                     </subst> the power to make the social Revolution in one day, par décret
                            plébiscitaire, you would abolish at once landed property and capital,
                            and would therefore have no occasion at all to occupy yourselves with
                                <hi rendition="#u">le droit d’héritage</hi>. On the other hand, if
                            you have not that power (and it is of course foolish to suppose such a
                            power), the proclamation of the <hi rendition="#u">abolition of
                                inheritance</hi> would be not a serious act, but a foolish menace,
                            rallying the whole peasantry and the whole small middleclass round the
                            reaction. Suppose f. i. that the Yankees had not had the power to
                            abolish slavery by the sword. What an imbecility it would have been to
                            proclaim the <hi rendition="#u">abolition of inheritance in slaves</hi>!
                            The whole thing rests on a superannuated idealism, which considers the
                            actual jurisprudence as the basis of our economical state, instead of
                            seeing that our economical state is the basis and source of our
                            jurisprudence! As to Bakounine, all he wanted was to improvise a
                            programme of his own making. Voilà tout. C’était un programme
                            d’occasion.</p>
               </item>
               <item>
                  <p>2) “<subst>
                        <del rendition="#s">the</del>
                        <add place="intralinear">l’</add>
                     </subst>
                     <hi rendition="#u">égalité</hi> des différentes <hi rendition="#u">classes</hi>”. To suppose on the one hand the
                            continued existence of
                            <hi rendition="#u" xml:space="preserve">classes</hi>, and on the other
                            the <hi rendition="#u">égalité</hi> of the members belonging to them,
                            this blunder shows you at once the shameless ignorance and
                            superficiality of that fellow who made it his “special mission” to
                            enlighten us on “theory”.</p>
               </item>
               <item>
                  <p>3) The working class must not occupy itself with <hi rendition="#u">politics</hi>. They must only organise themselves by trades unions.
                            One fine day, by means <pb/> of the <hi rendition="#u">
                        <orgName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0004811 https://d-nb.info/gnd/503624-0">Internationale</orgName>
                     </hi> they will supplant
                            the place off all existing states. You see what a
                            carricature
                            he has made of my doctrines! <del rendition="#s">
                        <unclear reason="illegible" cert="high">Xxxx xxx xxx</unclear>
                        <sic ana="#break-off"/>
                     </del> As the tranformation of the existing <subst>
                        <del rendition="#ow">states</del>
                        <add place="across">States</add>
                     </subst> into "Associations["] is our last <del rendition="#s">
                        <unclear reason="illegible" cert="high">qu</unclear>
                     </del> end, we must
                            allow the governments, these great Trade Unions of the ruling classes,
                            to do as they like, because to occupy ourselves with them is to
                            acknowledge them. Why! In the same way the old socialists said: You must
                            not occupy yourselves with the wages question, because you want to
                            abolish wages labor, and to struggle with the capitalist about the rate
                            of wages is to acknowledge the wages system! The ass has not even seen
                            that every class movement <hi rendition="#u">as</hi> a class movement,
                            is necessarily and was always a <hi rendition="#u">political</hi>
                            movement.</p>
               </item>

            <p sameAs="MBTextmitEinzug">This then is the whole
                    theoretical
                    baggage of Mahomet-<persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0005398 http://d-nb.info/gnd/118506102">Bakunine</persName>, a <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0011620 https://d-nb.info/gnd/118583158">Mahomet</persName>
                    without a <bibl type="primary" corresp="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/TJR7PB9R">Koran</bibl>. </p>
            <p sameAs="MBTextmitEinzug">His conspiracy he went secretly on with. He had some
                    affiliates in Spain and Italy, a few dupes at Paris and Geneva. Good old
                        <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0005483 http://d-nb.info/gnd/116104198">Becker</persName> was foolish enough to allow
                    himself to be put forward somewhat in a leading character by Bakunine. He
                    regrets his blunder at present.</p>
            <p sameAs="MBTextmitEinzug">The General Council was only informed and called upon to
                    sanction the statutes of the <orgName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0002566">“<hi rendition="#u">Alliance</hi>”</orgName> after <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0005398 http://d-nb.info/gnd/118506102">Bakunine</persName> considered that concern as
                    fait
                    accompli. However he was mistaken. In an elaborate
                    document
                    the General Council declared the “Alliance” to be an instrument of
                    disorganisation, and rejected <del rendition="#s">
                  <unclear reason="illegible" cert="high">x xxx</unclear>
               </del>
               <subst>
                  <del rendition="#ow">
                     <unclear reason="illegible" cert="high">xxx</unclear>
                  </del>
                  <add place="across"> every </add>
               </subst>connexion with it. (I shall send you the document.)</p>
            <p sameAs="MBTextmitEinzug">A few months later, the <hi rendition="#u">Comité
                        Directeur</hi> of the <orgName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0002566">“<hi rendition="#u">Alliance</hi>”</orgName> addressed a
                    letter to the General
                    Council to this effect: The great men were willing to dissolve their
                    organisation and merge it into the <orgName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0004811 https://d-nb.info/gnd/503624-0">
                  <hi rendition="#u">Internationale</hi>
               </orgName>, but on the other hand, we were to
                    declare categorically, <hi rendition="#u">Qui ou Non!</hi>, whether we
                    sanctioned their principles? If not, there would be a public secession on their
                    part, and we would be responsible for such a misfortune!</p>
            <p sameAs="MBTextmitEinzug">

                    that the General Council was not the Pope, that we allowed every section to have
                    its own theoretical views of the real movement, always supposed that nothing
                    directly opposite to our
                    Statutes
                    was put forward. We hinted in a delicate way that we considered their “theory”
                    to be a sham. We insisted that “l’égalité des classes” be changed for
                    “l’abolition des classes”, what they did. We requested them to give us a
                    dénombrement of their members, what they have never complied with. (You will
                    also get this second document). </p>
            <p sameAs="MBTextmitEinzug">
               <pb/> Thus the <orgName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0002566">Alliance</orgName> was <hi rendition="#u">nominally</hi> dissolved. In
                    fact, it continued to form an imperium in imperio. Its branches had no connexion
                    at all with the General Council, but that of conspiring against it. It acted
                    under <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0005398 http://d-nb.info/gnd/118506102">Bakunine</persName>’s dictatorship. He prepared
                    everything to frapper son grand coup au Congrès de Bâle. On the one side, he
                    made the Geneva Committee propose la <hi rendition="#u">question
                    d’héritage</hi>. We accepted the challenge. On the other side, he conspired
                    everywhere to discredit us and to have the <subst>
                  <del rendition="#s">Gener<ex>al Council</ex>
                  </del>
                  <add place="intralinear">seat of the General Council</add>
               </subst> transferred from London to Geneva. At that congress, ce
                    saltimbanque
                    figurait comme “délégué de Naples et de Lyon”. (at that latter place, <hi rendition="#u">
                  <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0003267 https://data.bnf.fr/fr/10736812">Albert Richard</persName>
               </hi>,
                    otherwise a very active and wellmeaning youngster, is his
                    acolyte.)
                    Where the fellow got the money for all his secret machinations, <subst>
                  <del rendition="#s">
                     <unclear reason="illegible" cert="high">voyages</unclear>
                  </del>
                  <add place="superlinear">travels</add>
               </subst> , missions of agents etc remains to this moment a secret. Poor <subst>
                  <del rendition="#ow">as</del>
                  <add place="across">like</add>
               </subst> a church mouse, he has never in his life earned a farthing by his own
                    work.</p>
            <p sameAs="MBTextmitEinzug">At the Congress he was baffled. After the Congress he
                    commenced to attack us publicly by his private Moniteur, <hi rendition="#u">
                  <bibl type="periodika" corresp="">Le Progrès</bibl>

                    Locle); edited by his valet <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0007128 http://d-nb.info/gnd/116921625">James Guillaume</persName>,
                    a Swiss schoolmaster, and by the <bibl type="periodika" corresp="">
                  <hi rendition="#u">Égalité</hi>
               </bibl> (de Genève.) We allowed this to go on
                    for some time, and then send <ref xml:id="a86c7eff-1894-48d5-ac7e-ff189458d5fd" corresp="#f6195b85-6617-4c67-995b-8566171c6727" type="editorialNote">a missive to the Federal

               </orgName>, had broken loose from him. <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0004439 http://d-nb.info/gnd/119221233">Robin</persName> et Co. were expulsed from the Editorship of
                    the <hi rendition="#u">Égalité</hi>. The Federal Council of <subst>
                  <del rendition="#s">Gene<ex>va</ex>
                  </del>
                  <add place="intralinear">the Swiss Romand Section</add>
               </subst> made his pronunciamento against the intrigues of the Alliance and its
                        <add place="superlinear">Muscovite</add> dictator.</p>
            <p sameAs="MBTextmitEinzug">Meanwhile <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0005398 http://d-nb.info/gnd/118506102">Bakounine</persName>
                    had left Geneva to reside at Tessin. His circumstances were changed. <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0006926 http://d-nb.info/gnd/118639218">Herzen</persName> died suddenly. Bakounine, who had attacked
                    him fiercely during the latter times (probably because he found Herzen’s purse
                    shut against him), all at once became the fiery apologist of <del rendition="#s">
                  <unclear reason="illegible" cert="high">xxx</unclear>
               </del> Herzen in
                        <add place="superlinear">the French etc press</add>. Why? Because Herzen
                        <del rendition="#s">got</del> (although a millionaire) received <subst>
                  <del rendition="#s">certainly</del>
                  <add place="superlinear">annually</add>
               </subst> for his <bibl type="periodika" corresp="">“<hi rendition="#u">Cloche</hi>”</bibl>
               <del rendition="#s">a rather</del> and “propagande Russe” a rather large sum
                    from the “Panslavistes démocrates” in Russia. Although a fierce enemy de
                    “l’héritage” Bakounine wanted to inherit Herzen’s <subst>
                  <del rendition="#ow">posotion.</del>
                  <add place="intralinear">position and salary.</add>
               </subst> He succeded by his
                    panegyrics
                    of the dead man. He had the “Cloche”, the subvention etc transferred to
                    himself.</p>
            <p sameAs="MBTextmitEinzug">On the other hand there had grown up at Geneva <subst>
                  <del rendition="#s">an emi<ex>grant</ex>
                  </del>
                  <add place="intralinear">a colony</add>
               </subst> of Russian Emigrés, enemies of <persName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0005398 http://d-nb.info/gnd/118506102">Bakunine</persName>, because they knew the <pb/> mere personal ambition of
                    this very mediocre man (although an accomplished intriguer) and because they
                    knew that in his “<hi rendition="#u">Russian</hi>” writings he propagates
                    doctrines quite contrary to the principles of the <orgName ref="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0004811 https://d-nb.info/gnd/503624-0">
                  <hi rendition="#u">Internationale</hi>
               </orgName>.</p>

                    is “Bakounine”. Both parties have appealed to the General Council.</p>

                        Muscovite</persName> has succeeded to call forth a great <add place="superlinear">public</add> scandal within our ranks, to make his

                        Association</orgName> with the poison of Sectarianism, and to paralyse our
                    action by secret intrigue. </p>
