Der Brief besteht aus einem Bogen festem, weißem Papier im Format 230 × 181 mm. Wasserzeichen: „A Pirie & Sons 1866“. Prägung: „Palatine Hotel Manchester“. Die ersten drei Seiten hat Joule vollständig beschrieben, die vierte ist leer. Schreibmaterial: schwarze Tinte.

Febry 11th / 67 Dear Sir

On certain terms I should desire to keep the Books of the Manchester Subscription Library togetherZur Manchester Subscription Library siehe Erl. zu S. Nördlinger an Engels, 26.1.1867.—If, for instance, I could retain my right to use them in comfort I should like it. But then your proposal is very badly placed before  me & I presume before others also. I don’t know whether the Schiller-Anstalt Zur Schiller-Anstalt siehe Erl. zu S. Nördlinger Engels, 26.1.1866. takes in either papers or Magazines—I don’t know if it has a desirable reading room or whether its members take the Books to their Homes. All these things should have been explained & I should still be glad  to learn something about them. It sounds rather discouraging to hear that there exists the need for a new Building. Should you think it worth your while to see me I shall be happy to consider the matter further.
