Der Brief besteht aus einem Blatt mittelstarkem, rosafarbenem Papier im Format 142 × 219 mm. Beide Seiten hat Liebknecht vollständig beschrieben. Eine Passage („and on the importance“ bis „not dwell here.“ ) steht, mit einem „V“-förmigen Zuordnungszeichen versehen, am unteren Rand der ersten Seite. Schreibmaterial: schwarze Tinte und Bleistift.

Von unbekannter Hand: Nummerierung der beschriebenen Seiten: „123.“ bzw. „124.“, ausradiert und in „114.“ bzw „115.“ korrigiert; Vermerke mit Bleistift auf der ersten Seite oben: „Liebknecht an Marx“ (links) und „(10 August 1866)“ (rechts).

Die Beilage („I send you the numbers“) ist nicht überliefert.

Sie korrespondiert auch mit der Tatsache, dass Marx diesen Brief nebst Beilagen am 13. August 1866 an Engels geschickt hatte (siehe Marx an Engels, 13.8.1866: „Einliegend ...“). Datierung in der Erstveröffentlichung: 10. August 1866 mit Verweis auf den o. g. Vermerk. Vermutlich beantwortet Liebknecht einen nicht überlieferten Brief (Marx an W. Liebknecht, vor 10.8.1866) von Marx, geschrieben vor dem 10. August 1866 („You recollect ...“). Well, through a series of operations and lucky chances that I cannot detail now, I have got into possession of a Paper, until now belonging to our liberal enemies—the “Mitteldeutsche Volkszeitung”. Of course, the political part must be quite “neutral” now, the smallest show of opposition would cause our suppression; but as to the social questions we have full elbowroom, and on the importance of our having an organ quite at our disposal as soon as the „foreigners” are gone, I need not dwell here. For the moment I cannot pay anything yet, but I have the best prospects, and if Eccarius would send me a correspondence now and then, I am sure it would not be to his disadvantage.
