<note>Die Datierung ergibt sich aus der Vermutung, dass der Brief
sich auf Angelegenheiten der Industrial Newspaper Company bezieht,
deren Direktoren und Aktionäre sowohl Marx, als auch
                                        Applegarth waren (siehe <bibl corresp="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/I7CVR5EI">MEGA<hi rendition="#sup">2</hi> I/20.</bibl>
                                        S. 799). Der Brief ist offensichtlich nach dem 10. Februar
                                        1866 geschrieben worden (siehe <ref target="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0000061">Marx an

im vorliegenden Brief: „I have the pleasure to inform you
...“). Die Sitzung des Direktoriums, die Marx besucht hatte,
fand am Montag, dem 12. März 1866 statt (siehe <ref target="https://megadigital.bbaw.de/M0000075">Marx an Engels, 24.3.1866</ref>:
„Bevor ich hierhin aufbrach ...“. So ist zu vermuten, dass
der Brief kurz vor dem 12. März 1866 geschrieben worden
                                        ist.</note>
