And yet,—might we not use the paper as a, so to say “officious” organ? Hofstetten would give any written declaration or bond, that might be required. I think the Soc. Dem. might do some service for the Int. Associat. and your name would not have to be mentioned in the affair. Of course, you know that it has broken off all connexion with B. Becker (who calls himself a “dead lion”, being modest for the first time in his life, and forgetting that a living ass is worth more than a dead lion) and with the rotten remains of Lassalle’s “glorious creation”. Tell me immediately your opinion on this point so that I may act accordingly in Berlin.

Without our direct or indirect help the S.D. must go to the dogs very soon, that Hofst. told me himself.—He gave me proofs, that the paper is not now in the pay of the Government.—Siehe Marx an Engels, 10.2.1866.

(last week) [Karl Marx:] Ein englisches Arbeiter-Manifest, veröffentlicht von der voriges Jahr zu London zum ersten Male zusammengetretenen „working men’s international association“.
