| 4 Mai. 1866.

My dear friend,

As I am at this moment,  Marx war Anfang 1866 an Furunkulose erkrankt (siehe Marx an Engels, 10.2.1866 und Erl.).
after so long an interruption of work,
very busily engaged in making up for lost time, you will excuse me for writing this time only a few lines.

I shall send you to-day the last number of the “Commonwealth”. The financial position of the paper is such that it struggles from week to week and is altogether disabled from paying one farthing for Foreign Correspondence. Its circulation is increasing, but you know that a penny paper wants at least 20 000 subscribers, and cannot even then make the two ends meet without a goodly number of advertisements.  Zur Zeitung „The Commonwealth“ siehe Erl. zu Marx an J. Ph. Becker, zw. 9. u. 15.1.1866.
The “Commonwealth” is of too recent an origin to come up to those requisites.

Der Beschluss über die Verlegung des Genfer Kongresses der IAA (siehe Erl. zu Marx an Engels, 5.1.1866) auf den 3. September 1866 wurde in der Sitzung des Zentralrats der IAA am 1. Mai 1866 angenommen (siehe The Minute Book 1864–1866. In: MEGA² I/20. S. 405/406 und MEGA² I/20. Erl. 403.14-15).
The Congress at Geneva has been postponed for the 3d of September next.
 Die IAA.
The society
is rapidly sp[rea]ding, particularly in France.  Siehe H. Jung an Marx, 2.5.1866.
Italian societies ha[ve] also recently joined.
Zum Streik der Schneider in Großbritannien und der Unterstützung durch die IAA siehe Erl. zu Marx an Engels, 23.4.1866 und Erl. zu Engels an Marx, 1.5.1866.
The propaganda in London has been // taken a new start, principally due to the circumstances circumstance that the successful strikes of the London tailors and wireworkers were due to our intervention which prevented the | import of workingmen from France, Switzerland, Belgium, which had been contemplated by the masters. This proof the its immediate practically practical importance has struck the practical English mind.

Karl Marx: Warnung. In: MEGA² I/20. S. 204/205). Siehe auch Erl. zu Engels an Marx, 1.5.1866 und Erl. zu A. F. Haufe und F. Leßner an Marx, 3.5.1866. Zur Veröffentlichung des Aufrufs siehe W. Liebknecht an Marx, zw. 8. u. 15.5.1866 und Erl. zu W. Liebknecht an Marx, 15.5.1866.
For the same purpose you find, on the last page of this letter an “avis” to the German tailors which I call upon you to have inserted in such German papers as you have access to.
At the same time you will oblige me by sending me a copy, or two, of those some papers in which the “avis” will have been inserted, telling me at the same time the names of all other papers that should have reprinted it. Kugelmann might also be useful for this purpose.

My best compliments to Mrs. Liebknecht. I feel exceedingly thankful for theher friendly interest in my welfare.

Yours fraternally
A. Williams.
